The Five Most Common Roadblocks to Your Fitness Success - And They're All Outside the Gym!
By Anne Samoilov
Mistake #1 You Don't Have A Specific Fitness Goal -- I know it sounds far fetched, but half the time the reason why people don't get in shape is because they don't make a concerted decision to do so and give themselves reasons to do so. Either you don't get around to defining why you want to get in shape or you just don't think it's necessary. Either way, you are setting yourself up for failure.
Solution: Write down a list of specific measurable goals related to your health and fitness. Instead of saying, I want to lose weight, you might write: I will be a size 4 by Christmas or I will drop 2 dress sizes by my high school reunion. Another goal might be, I will workout 3x per week at home or at the gym. Try to list a specific item and attach a date to it. Keep your list posted everywhere to remind yourself what you are doing and why.
Mistake #2 You Don't Have The Right Tools -- Sure you can do a workout at home or go the apartment complex gym and walk on the treadmill while Jeopardy or sitcom reruns are on, but is that really going to get you in the best shape? Maybe you picked up the latest Shape Magazine and some whole wheat bread and protein bars. Is this your idea of a plan? The purpose of a plan is simple, to get you on the right path and keep you there.
Solution: Decide what workouts you will do for the first 4 weeks, how many times per week you want to work out and make sure you have everything needed to do those--a mat, some dumbbells, maybe a dvd. Now, find a healthy meal plan to follow in conjunction with the workout. Buy a journal or notebook and record your food, exercise and general mental state every day. It's a great way to unload. If you need a partner, find one before you workout. Maybe that person is someone you know personally, maybe you follow someone else's routine--and met them online. Whatever the case, find some support.
Mistake #3 You Think You Can Eat Anything As Long As You Workout--This is a common misconception or statement I hear all the time. It's crazy actually. I know personally that it wasn't true for me! I've worked out regularly for the last 15 years and only when I started eating clean, not counting calories, and just being sensible with portions, did I actually make some significant body changes. What you put in your body affects your health & fitness more than anything you can do!
Solution: Start a food journal to determine how your eat right now. Do you eat out a lot at restaurants or fast food places? Do you eat a lot of prepared frozen meals? Do you eat foods high in sugar? I'm not saying you can't eat good food. Start cutting down on the amount of sugar you consume. Sugar is everywhere -- not just the stuff you put in your coffee/tea. If you eat a lot of prepared microwave dinners or breads or condiments like ketchup...it's hidden there. Start preparing your own food.
Mistake #4 You Don't Drink Enough Water -- Sure you drink water, but do you consume mostly diet soda during the day, coffee in the morning, and maybe a tea in the afternoon? I see the value of water most clearly by watching my 21 month old daughter. When she gets cranky and whiny, and assuming it's not dinner time, she needs water. As soon as she drinks it, she's playing happily again and isn't flustered or whiny. Water is one of those easy things to forget, but it is crucial to your body's physical function--as well as increasing your mental function.
Solution: Replace the sodas with water. The sodas have so much sodium in them. I have seen thin clients of mine get even thinner, just from dropping the diet coke. It was making them puffy! If you hate the taste of water, put lemons in it and drink it for a day. You can even drop other fruits into your water too. Do a search for Sassy Water for a great idea on how to doctor up some water. You will see how quickly you can feel the effects of water. I always try to drink 80-100 oz per day.
Mistake #5 You Don't Eat Enough Fiber -- You've been eating well, increased your veggies, went out less to dinner, drank less alcohol. Why do you still feel a little puffy. Many people don't understand why fiber is so important and that is crucial to getting waste out of your system. If there's any part of your body you want to keep healthy, it's your colon. This is the breeding ground for lots of diseases, bowel disorders and potentially life threatening illnesses.
Solution: Eat oatmeal in the morning. Take a supplement like Benefiber. Add Ground Flaxseed to yogurt of your morning oatmeal. Apples, Almonds, Artichokes, Beans.
